Bob was born on August 25th in
Los Angles California. He has one younger sister, Martha Conley Atkinson,
now deceased. His family also consists of two children, Ronald Conley and Colleen
Conley Owens and a step-daughter, Wendy McCormick Conley ALL OF WHOM
ARE OPTIMIST MEMBERS. The story only gets better because Bob has seven
grand children (Ron has two girls and a boy), Colleen has a boy and girl and
Wendy two girls. And even better since Ron has five grand children giving
Bob Conley an additional five GREAT grand children.
Bob's father was employed in heavy construction, thus
the family moved frequently, seeing many parts of the world, and changing high
schools five times.
During World War II, Bob received an appointment to the
United States Merchant Marine Academy by the Congressman from the State of
Washington. He graduated in February 1945 as an Ensign in the USNR and was
issued an Unlimited 3rd Engineer License in the US Merchant Marine.
He returned to civilian life and heavy construction
work in 1947, purchased 11 acres in Lakeside, CA, built a home and started a
family. Bob then worked on major construction projects from Alaska to San
Diego. He became the General Superintendent for Dale Corporation in San
Diego and a Licensed Contractor in 1954 opening his own company, A-C Paving
Company.
Bob joined the UPTOWN OPTIMIST CLUB of San Diego in
1980, was a Distinguished President in 1984-1985, Lieutenant Governor in
1986-1987, a Distinguished CALSO Governor in 1993-1994 and an Outstanding
International Vice President in 1999-2000. He has attended every Optimist
International Convention since 1993, and has sat on various International
Committees throughout the years. He is currently serving as a member of
the Optimist International Pave the Way Committee.
Bob says, "After a long engagement," on April
15,1991 he married his wife Jackie. Jackie has a son Allen living in San
Diego, two daughters, Amber and Annette, living in Washington State. She
also has six grand children, three boys and three girls. Jackie and Bob
try to visit each of the grand children every six months.
Of note: Jackie is Charter President of the Casa de Oro (House of Gold)
Optimist Club of San Diego which was formed in less than 53 hours in 1994.
Jackie remains very active with that Optimist Club.
Jackie and Bob are now retired, enjoying traveling,
family, black jack tournaments, cruising, taking care of their three cats at
home, Optimist friends all while remodeling their home in El Cajon, CA.
Bob is currently the President of the San Diego
Optimist Club and the Lieutenant Governor for CALSO Zone 3.
