Optimist Club of Pt. Loma
PO Box 6141
San Diego, CA 92166
Date: April 2003
The Optimist Club of Pt. Loma was founded in 1954 and presently has 81 members. It
functions to support the youth and the community of the Peninsula area of San Diego. This
includes the Peninsula Family YMCA, annual scholarships to graduating seniors from Pt.
Loma High School, various sports teams, Oratorical & Essay contests, recognition of
outstanding students from schools in the area and the summer Sailing
Program in partnership with the San Diego Yacht Club and the Peninsula YMCA for those
deserving youngsters who would not otherwise have had the opportunity to learn and enjoy
sailing. This latter program involves 40 youngsters for a 2 week period every summer.Additionally,
the club places 150 U. S. flags along 2 miles of Rosecrans St. every Sunday and
national holiday. This program together with the Sailing Program have received recognition
from the President of Optimist International.
Funding for these activities comes from two major fund raisers each year. The major fund
raiser is the Golden Grand which is combined with a Silent Auction to raise about $21,000.
This event is a dinner/dance which includes numerous cash prizes with a Grand Prize of
$10,000. Two Hundred and Fifty (250) tickets are sold to this event. The second fund
raiser is named Miss Golden Grand and consists of a steak fry and raffle.
The Club also has a 501-C3 Foundation for accepting charitable donations which will be
used for additional community projects.
The club meets weekly at 7:00 AM, Tuesday mornings at the San Diego Yacht
Club [address above]. Every meeting includes a guest speaker on topics of interest in the San Diego area. During
the summer a monthly steak fry is held at the San Diego Yacht Club on a Monday evening at 5:30 PM in lieu
of that week's breakfast meeting.
