 What is JOOI ?

JOOI” stands for Junior Optimist Octagon International. It’s the umbrella organization which links local Optimist Youth Clubs to others throughout North America! Much like Optimist International, JOOI is governed by an international board of directors as well as by district officers. Each year, Optimist Youth Club members attend district and international conventions to elect their peers to fill these positions. San Diego now has two students on the International Board of Directors working with three other students to plan the International Convention.

With special guidance and support from a sponsoring Optimist Club, an Optimist Youth Club completes fun projects and activities to improve the community and better the lives of its residents. Members have opportunities to polish leadership skills, manage money and practice good citizenship. These “hands-on” experiences help prepare students for college and adulthood!

Project possibilities are endless! Every Optimist Youth Club is challenged to study the needs within its community. A club may choose to complete environmental projects, visit the elderly, participate in Special Olympics, serve food in shelters, sponsor Red Ribbon Week events, or help at school events. There can be fund-raisers to benefit the Childhood Cancer Campaign or other local charities.

        Junior Optimst News

November 14, 2010 - Mission Bay's Santa Clara recreation center was the location for the JOOI District BEACH CLEANUP. Octagon clubs from Hoover High School, Bonita Vista High School and and Coronado and Bonita Middle Schools exchanged ideas and got to know about each club's activities. Governor Toni Vallido planned some fun and games to keep the action interesting. The guest speaker had everyone captivated to help plan positive future goals. After lunch the clean up and weed pulling went quickly as the sunny day was enjoyed.

February 20, 2010 - Pro Kids Golf Academy on a rainy day of a holiday weekend had only 2 Octagon clubs arrive to hear about a wonderful free golf academy and college scholarships. Junior Optimists donated children's books to King Chavez Charter school, planned for the JOOI International Optimist Convention, had a great lunch and cleaned up the park.

February 26, 2010 - The third annual "Dance For a Cure" showcased 12 hip-hop dance groups for a cheering audience. The fundraiser for childhood cancer research at Johns Hopkins University has now brought in $10,000 for the Optimist International Foundation's Chilhood Cancer Campaign. Bonita Vista High student Donovan Chu again produced and directed the lively event. Next year's program will be put on by BVHS Octagon students in early spring.

JOOI District officers are planning the CALSO District Convention for April 24, 2010 to elect officers for next year. That will be held at Rohr Park Manor 4548 Sweetwater Rd. Bonita, 91902 from 10:00AM until 12:30. The service project will be to help clean/paint/restore the historic manor house which the adult Optimists have been working on for many months. Students really look forward to meeting each other and exchanging ideas while working together on a community service project.

July 5,6,7,2010 - Denver, Colorado is the place for the JOOI International Convention. Since two San Diego students are on the International Board of directors planning this most westerly convention, we are hoping many students will take the trip together. Making international friends, attending educational workshops, and training to be leaders will fill the time between the talent show, formal dinner, election and closing dance. Adult Optimists will help support new junior officers, so contact E Lucca before April 30 to get the details. ElaineMLucca@hotmail.com
