2010 Topic

"The Internet: Today's Evolution or Tomorrows Menace"

When: Club Deadline Feb. 28, 2003
District Deadline April 15, 2003
Who: Youth under the age of 19 as of December 31 of the current school year

To Enter: PLEASE, contact your local Optimist Club.

       High school students from all over North America write short essays on the topic of freedom which are judged at regional competitions. More than $120,000 in scholarships are awarded every year.

In general, the guidelines require that contestants be under 19 as of  December 31 of the current school year and attending grades 10, 11, or 12 in the US or Canada; Secondary IV, V, or CEGEP 1 in Quebec; or 11, 12, or 13 in the Caribbean. 

Each District winner is awarded a plaque, a $2,500 scholarship and is automatically entered into the International Essay contest where a panel of judges select the top three essays. The awards are:

First place       A plaque and a $6,000 college scholarship
Second place  A plaque and a $3,750 college scholarship
Third place      A plaque and a $2,250 college scholarship

The Essay Program Planning Guide is intended for use by Optimist Clubs in organizing and conducting an essay contest in their club. They have absolutely no information on entering the contest and are of no use to students wishing to enter the contest. To enter, you must contact your local Optimist club!
