Goals
California South District
Administrative Year 2002-2003
as set forth by
Governor Norma Lehman
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
DISTRICT
We are hard at work on several goals this year in the CALSO
district. Follow
our progress by attending district and club business meetings, through your
district and club officers, and this website.
1. IMPROVE COMMUNICATIONS by mail,
through the web site, and
through the Optimist International mail box for each club.
2. PROVIDE SUPPORT TO CLUBS by district officers
through phone, mail
and internet contacts; club visits; web site of both
International and our
district.
3. STRENGTHEN CLUBS by encouraging the use of
personnel and resource
materials from International, training workshops at district
meetings.
4. SUPPORT AND STRENGTHEN OUR JOOI PROGRAM.
Encourage
Optimist clubs to sponsor a JOOI club; financially support
JOOI members
attending their International convention; work with existing
clubs.
5. PROMOTE PERSONAL IMPROVEMENT AND KNOWLEDGE OF
OUR INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION through the use of OI
programs
and materials, attendance at district and international
meetings.
6. INCREASE MEMBERSHIP by building new clubs,
adding members to
present clubs and better community publicity.
As your club members grow, your club becomes stronger. A strong club serves
your community better. Your projects reach more youth and are sustained
over time. Your relationships with each other and the youth you work with are
the key for success.
HOW ARE YOU
SERVING?
We say we are "for kids" - so are 17,000 other groups. We contribute
once to a group of kids - like toys at Christmas - and return to our club
meetings for more food, fun and friendship. Then as the weeks and
months go by, we wonder why other adults do not see how worthwhile
our work is, and want to become Optimist Club members, too.
Adults are volunteering in larger numbers than ever before. They don't
feel the need to pay to be part of an organization so they can do individual
volunteer work. This is generally true. So what happens when the
individual is no longer able to do the volunteer work? The need is still
there but goes unmet unless someone else turns up.
Optimist International has been around since 1919 meeting the needs of
our communities, year after year, with responsibility, consistency and
reliability. When one member is no longer able to serve, another one
steps up. When one member does not have the skills or ability to match
the need, another member does. We are stronger as a group than we are
as a collection of individuals.
Our strength lies in our teamwork, our collective efforts and our commitment
over time. We are capable of more than individual, one time projects. When
you decide on a project do you then start looking for a group of kids to work
with? We cannot accomplish our work with individual acts of charity and feel
good projects alone. We must build relationships with our youth if we are truly
to make a difference.
