NEW CLUBS EQUAL NEW MEMBERS

“As all of you know by now OI, and CALSO, are desperately trying to increase membership.  One of the best ways to do that is by building a New Club in your Zones.  It, automatically, adds 25 members to our districts and to the OI rolls. It takes a bit more work than just bringing in members, one by one, but the rewards are great and immediate.  However, no one expects you to do it alone, least of all me.

Some of you may already be aware, and if not consider yourselves so informed, that I volunteered some months ago to act as the New Club chair for the CALSO district.  Unfortunately, I don’t seem to be reaching all of you in offering my time and assistance in starting these new Clubs.  I am now trying to contact those of you who have any interest in such a project through the auspices of this monthly newsletter.

I have materials available, both in writing and on CD’s, to send you.  I will provide guidance, contacts and ideas I have discovered in my own efforts. AND I have access to people, both locally and at OI, who can greatly augment your efforts on building for the future.   I am ready & willing to help! Won’t you let me help you?”   Charlie Pease, Lt. Governor

37TH ANNUAL CALIFORNIA SOUTH DISTRICT CONVENTION AUGUST 21 – AUGUST 24, 2003

The Convention packets were handed out at the Second Quarterly Board Meeting in February.  If you need a packet, please call me and I will be happy to mail one to you.

Plan on arriving on Thursday, August 21st to take advantage of some of the pre-convention activities.  There will be an optional trip to the Aquarium of the Pacific.  Group tickets will be available.  A golf tournament is being planned.  Thursday night we will be having dinner on the Queen Mary in the Chelsea Restaurant.  The menu looks wonderful!!

Have you decided which Gilligan Character you might like to be?  Friday night at the Convention our theme will be “Gilligan’s Island.”  Start watching some of the Gilligan shows to decide who you might want to be!

Do you have a Queen Mary Memory?  Send a paragraph of your experience to Bonnie Styles @ 1238 Manchester Street, National City, VA 91950.  These experiences will be shared at the convention.

Call the “Queen” and reserve your room today!  Ask for the California South District Optimist Stateroom Block.  The single/double rate is $125.00 per night.  Reserve your room before July 22.  1-800-437-2934 or 1-562-432-6964.

JOIN THE TEAM!

I am in the midst of planning Optimist year 2003-2004.  If you have any ideas of what you would like to see happen, please contact me.  I want to focus on youth and programs.  In addition, I am planning quarterly social functions.

If you would like to join the team as a Lt. Governor, let me know.  I am looking for Optimists that would like to give of their time for the youth in their communities.  I am looking forward to seeing each and every one of you at the Third Quarterly!  Remember, that is when each zone elects their Lt. Governor!”
Richard Rivera, Governor Elect

“For all JOOI Clubs, the CALSOUTH District Convention will be on April 26 9:30AM-12:00 at East Lake Elementary School, 1955 Hillside Drive, Chula Vista. There will be district elections for next year, Coronado students will have a workshop on recruiting members, plans will be discussed for going to the international convention in Kansas City and clubs will share how their activities have gone. Each club should hold it's own officer elections before April 26 so each club can introduce their new officers at this convention. Directions: 805 to H Street east for about 3 miles, turn left on East Lake Drive, then left one-half block to the school.

Reminder to all adult clubs: I'm looking for donations to send 10 JOOI high school students to Kansas City July 16 -20,2003. Officers benefit emensly from the training and learning from other clubs. At a cost of about $750 per student, the personal growth of the individuals is great for our district. Please send checks payable to CALSO District, with a memo "for JOOI Convention" to Elaine Lucca at P.O. Box 1211, Bonita, CA, 91908. Thank you for your commitment to support our youth.”

 Words from Governor-Elect Richard Rivera

”It was a pleasure seeing so many of my Optimist friends at the Second Quarterly! I want to thank everyone for making the weekend such a successful one.  As usual the Naud family did an exceptional job of organizing the Friday Night social.  Special thanks go to Tony and Pat Peraino.  The golf tournament went off without a hitch!

By the time you read this article I will be back from my Governor-Elect Conference in St. Louis.  I am looking forward to receiving some great training and networking with all of the other Governors in Optimist International.  I will be searching for fund-raising ideas and programs for kids that I will be able to share with our clubs.”
Richard Rivera, Governor Elect

NORMA’S NOTES

Our calendar for this third quarter is full with local and O.I. projects.

In April our Zones are holding Oratorical zone contests, getting ready for the semi-finals and final contests, May 3 and 17 respectively. Club members should attend these as much as possible to be an audience for the speakers. Also in April all Optimist clubs must hold their elections for next years officers. JOOI clubs are expected to elect officers between April 1st – 15th. All clubs must submit written reports of the results. Club Secretary/Treasurer officers should be prepared to pay district and OI dues promptly - the third quarter dues will be billed shortly after April 1.

In May the Respect for Law week is celebrated in all clubs the first full week. I hope you are planning a special program or observance. For program ideas for other meetings refer to the CALSO web site for ideas for speakers. If you have a fine speaker, please send the information to Webmaster Ron Foster to include in the Speakers page.  Lt. Governors are required to make official visits their clubs during the third quarter. When your Lt. Governor visits please give him a chance to speak and remember to pay for his meal!

Continue to work on Honor Club requirements. Have your prepared a CPA? Also work on your scrapbook and bulletins for submissions to our contests at District Convention in August. I hope many of you are making plans to attend either or both of the O.I. convention in Kansas City and CALSO convention in Long Beach.
By or before our next quarterly Conference May 17 at Grossmont College we will need your suggestions concerning proposed district policy changes. Plan now to attend both the Board of Directors meeting in the morning and the finals for the Oratorical contest in the afternoon. See you there
!”

Optimist Creed

Promise Yourself -

To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind.

To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet.

To make all your friends feel that there is something in them.

To look at the sunny side of everything, and make your optimism come true.

To think only of the best, to work only for the best and expect only the best.

To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own.

To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future.

To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile.

To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others.

To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear,  and too happy
to permit the presence of trouble.
